China Selects GE (NYSE: GE) Technology Again to Support Rapid Growth in Wind Energy Sector
Three Projects with HECIC New Energy will Add 132 MW to China’s Renewable Energy Capacity
SCHENECTADY, N.Y.----GE (NYSE: GE) announced today that it has signed contracts to supply 88 wind turbines to HECIC New Energy Co., Ltd, one of China’s leading wind energy developers, for three new projects in Hebei and Shanxi Provinces. The projects will support the rapid growth of wind energy investments in China, which today is the world’s fourth largest producer of wind power.
“As a corporate citizen of China, our strategy is to apply the most advanced and reliable technology and technological expertise for every project that will help China reach its goal of achieving clean energy.”.China’s plan to add 150 gigawatts of installed wind power capacity by 2020 would require it to install approximately 11.5 gigawatts of installed wind power capacity per year from 2009-2020.
The new wind farms will add 132 megawatts of installed wind power capacity for China, which currently ranks fourth, behind only the United States, Germany and Spain in wind power production. According to the Global Wind Energy Council, China continued its rapid growth in wind energy in 2008 by doubling its installed capacity to 12.2 gigawatts.
To date GE has committed to supply 895 units of 1.5-MW wind turbines to China, in support of the country’s aggressive renewable energy program. China is aiming to increase power generation from renewable sources to 15 percent of the nation’s total by 2020. To achieve this, China will need to strengthen development on solar, wind and biomass energy.
“The development of wind power is a key economic growth area for China and plays a critical role in achieving our national target to increase to 150 gigawatts of installed wind energy capacity by 2020,” said Dr. Cao Xin, General Manager of HECIC New Energy Co., Ltd. “As a corporate citizen of China, our strategy is to apply the most advanced and reliable technology and technological expertise for every project that will help China reach its goal of achieving clean energy.”
“China is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s largest markets for wind power technology,” said Victor Abate, Vice President-Renewables for GE Power & Water. “We are committed to helping our Chinese customers develop the country’s vast potential for clean, wind-generated power, which will enable China to meet both its growing energy and environmental responsibilities.”
GE’s 1.5-megawatt wind turbine is the most reliable and widely deployed wind turbine in the global wind industry today. More than 12,000 of these machines have been installed for projects worldwide. In 2008, HECIC New Energy Co., Ltd purchased 66 of the machines for projects for which commissioning has been completed. The wind turbines for the HECIC New Energy projects will be equipped with Low Voltage Ride-Through and Wind Farm Management Systems, which are advanced and grid- friendly connection technologies, enhancing reliability and stability of the wind turbine.
GE’s support of China’s wind industry is just one part of the company’s total commitment to the country. GE started doing business in China as early as 1906 and currently runs 36 wholly owned or joint venture companies in China ranging from manufacturing, service, research and development, financial services and sourcing, with a total workforce of over 13,000.

Driving Green; Tesla Unveils World’s First Mass-Produced, Highway-Capable EV
Point Roberts, March 30, 2009 - InvestorIdeas.com and its green investor portal Renewableenergystocks.com report on recent updates in the EV market.

Tesla Unveils World’s First Mass-Produced, Highway-Capable EV
Model S Sedan Has Anticipated Base Price of $49,900, up to 300-Mile Range and 45-Minute QuickCharge Capability
HAWTHORNE, Calif. ---Tesla Motors recently reported it is now taking orders for the Model S, an all electric family sedan that carries seven people and travels 300 miles per charge.
The Model S, which carries its charger onboard, can be recharged from any 120V, 240V or 480V outlet, with the latter taking only 45 minutes. By recharging their car while they stop for a meal, drivers can go from LA to New York in approximately the same time as a gasoline car. Moreover, the floor-mounted battery pack is designed to be changed out in less time than it takes to fill a gas tank, allowing for the possibility of battery-pack swap stations.
The floor-mounted powertrain also results in unparalleled cargo room and versatility, as the volume under the front hood becomes a second trunk. Combining that with a four-bar linkage hatchback rear trunk and flat folding rear seats, the Model S can accommodate a 50-inch television, mountain bike *and* surfboard simultaneously. This packaging efficiency gives the Model S more trunk space than any other sedan on the market and more than most SUVs.
“Model S doesn’t compromise on performance, efficiency or utility -- it’s truly the only car you need,” said Tesla CEO, Chairman and Product Architect Elon Musk. “Tesla is relentlessly driving down the cost of electric vehicle technology, and this is just the first of many mainstream cars we’re developing.”
Tesla expects to start Model S production in late 2011. The company believes it is close to receiving $350 million in federal loans to build the Model S assembly plant in California from the Dept of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program.
Building on Proven Technology
Tesla is the only production automaker already selling highway-capable EVs in North America or Europe. With 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the Roadster outperforms almost all sports cars in its class yet is six times as energy efficient as gas guzzlers and delivers 244 miles per charge. Tesla has delivered nearly 300 Roadsters, and nearly 1,000 more customers are on the wait list.
Teslas do not require routine oil changes, and they have far fewer moving (and breakable) parts than internal combustion engine vehicles. They qualify for federal and state tax credits, rebates, sales tax exemptions, free parking, commuter-lane passes and other perks. Model S costs roughly $5 to drive 230 miles – a bargain even if gasoline were $1 per gallon.
The anticipated base price of the Model S is $49,900 after a federal tax credit of $7,500. The company has not released options pricing. Three battery pack choices will offer a range of 160, 230 or 300 miles per charge.
“Model S costs half as much as a Roadster, and it’s a better value than much cheaper cars,” Musk said. “The ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity vs. gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000. I’m positive this car will be the preferred choice of savvy consumers.”
The standard Model S does 0-60 mph in under six seconds and will have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, with sport versions expected to achieve 0-60 mph acceleration well below five seconds. A single-speed gearbox delivers effortless acceleration and responsive handling. A 17-inch touchscreen with in-car 3G connectivity allows passengers to listen to Pandora Radio or consult Google Maps, or check their state of charge remotely from their iPhone or laptop.
Tesla is taking reservations online and at showrooms in California. Tesla will open a store in Chicago this spring and plans to open stores in London, New York, Miami, Seattle, Washington DC and Munich later this year.
About Tesla Motors
San Carlos, Calif.-based Tesla Motors Inc. designs and manufactures electric vehicles with exceptional design, performance and efficiency, while conforming to all North American and European safety, environmental and durability standards. The Roadster, which has a 0-to-60 mph acceleration of 3.9 seconds and a base price of $101,500 after a federal tax credit, is the only highway-capable production EV for sale in North America and Europe. Tesla expects to begin producing the Model S sedan in late 2011.

Several of the solar leaders had impressive gains, with Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE) moving up 44.82% on the day.
Renewable Energy Stocks solar expert, J. Insiders Buy the Pullback With a Penchant for Energy; 14 Companies the Smart Insiders Favor the Most, posted March 5, 2009
They’re back! In a repeat of what happened the last time stocks took a trip down to these levels in November, insiders have decisively ramped up their buying.
This insider buying redux suggests three things.
The market is at least a trading buy here for decent gains over the next days or weeks.
The current range for stocks could mark the low for the bear market. Insiders stepped up big time the last time the market reached these levels – and they are doing so now again on the retest.
The stocks insiders favor in this pullback could be good for a 15%-20% rebound in short order. I say that because that’s what happened to many of the stocks we highlighted here the last time insiders stepped up to the plate big time, in November and December.
One positive aspect to the buying on this pullback is that it is nearly across the board -- in everything from financials like Citigroup (C), to retailers like Deckers Outdoor (DECK) and Coach (COH) as well as the biotech company ViroPharma (VPHM), the recruiting company On Assignment (ASGN) and beaten down big cap classics like General Electric (GE).
But one of the strongest sectors for insider buying now is energy.

Renewable Energy Stocks Sector Close-UP; Renewable Energy Stocks Trading Up in Anticipation of an Obama Win?
Renewable Energy Stocks Sector Close-UP; Renewable Energy Stocks Trading Up in Anticipation of an Obama Win?
POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC—November 4, 2008 -- www.RenewableEnergyStocks.com,
a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a sector close-up on renewable energy stocks and the recent trading activity pending the election. As the sector trades up, two experts comment on the future of renewable energy.
According to solar expert Peter Lynch, feature writer of the Renewable and Solar Energy Perspectives at Investorideas.com http://www.renewableenergystocks.com/PL/ ,
"Senator Obama truly understands that energy is the greatest problem that he will face as President. He realizes that the age of oil and fossil fuels are drawing to a necessary close. He also realizes that Global Warming is one of the greatest hazards of our time. Most thinking people realize this too, but to date, we have had no leadership capable of leading the world in a new direction. As President Obama can be this leader, he will be the catalyst for the dawn of the solar revolution.”
Dr. Robert Wilder, of the WilderHill Clean Energy Index (^ECO) comments , “ Like a rubber band that's been stretched quite far, the fact the U.S. fell behind other nations in clean energy the past eight years now looks like it may snap back the other way. Combining a fresh new White House outlook that's positive on green jobs, with a Congress led by a pro-renewable outlook in the House and possibly even 60 vote majority in the Senate means new thinking becomes possible. Old dominance by fossil fuels may even wane: the many harms from coal and oil for instance might be treated for the first time as the problems they are. And better energy independence too could be taken seriously. Whether by cap and trade, or a carbon tax, those carbon laden fuels may even help generate the revenues for new U.S. clean energy, and green jobs here at home.”

Batteries are becoming increasingly important to our lives. Not only to sustain our rapidly expanding wireless technology requirements, but also to support our need to travel about. With hybrids, plug in hybrids and fully electric vehicles beginning to provide us with more cost effective transport, we’re bound to depend more and more on batteries. And at a larger scale, as we integrate more renewable sources of energy into our electricity grid, we’ll need to manage supplies with more uncertainty. So, there is likely to be an increased need for energy storage solutions to help temper the ups and downs of power supply irregularity.
Lithium Ion batteries seem to get a lot press for their higher storage capacity per pound, but the more traditional lead-acid batteries are likely to be with us for a long time to come, particularly in the many industrial applications the use them.
The biggest maker of industrial lead acid batteries is Enersys (ENS). They make batteries for forklifts and for back up power systems, over 60% of which is overseas. They’re selling into markets like global logistics, telecoms companies and the military.
Enersys has a proprietary technology that means their batteries last longer and are smaller than the average lead-acid battery. They call it "thin pure plate lead" or TPPL. According to their last conference call, demand for these batteries is more than they can keep up with. So they’re expanding the plant that makes them.
But Enersys is not just about old battery technology. They also have a lithium-ion battery technology which they sell primarily to military, telecoms and specialty industries. So this steady tech company is well positioned for near term as well as longer term growth. (www.enersys.com)
Another large maker of lead acid batteries is Exide (XIDE) who make batteries for cars, bikes, boats, agricultural equipment, construction vehicles etc. They also sell specialized batteries for forklifts and other industrial equipment including the military. Like EDS, over half of their sales come from overseas.
Only yesterday I had to put a new battery in my wife’s car. And where do you think the old one went? Yep, Exide, who happen to be the largest recycler of lead batteries in the U.S. That means they’re getting better value than buying lead on the open market, and saving a bundle in the process of being green.
Their market cap, at $837 million, is about 25% less than Enersys. But their sales are considerably higher and their p/e ratio is slightly lower, so I’m inclined to like them a bit more. (www.exide.com)
Axion Power International (AXPW) is developing a proprietary technology they call PbC – perhaps because it’s a hybrid of lead-acid and carbon. See their website for more details on how it’s made (www.axionpower.com). Axion aims to sell the batteries made with PbC as an upgrade to conventional lead-acid batteries in industrial applications. This is an enormous broad-based potential market that will likely respond to more efficient batteries.
They’ve been focused for over two years on refining their manufacturing methods as well as continuing with performance testing on the pre-production prototypes. These tests have shown that their PbC batteries have considerably longer cycle-lives, faster recharge rates and more power than conventional lead acid batteries. But then, a lot can change between pre-production and real world production.
If you’re in the mood for more speculative plays, Ener1 (HEV) is a good start. They don’t have significant sales yet, but are developing Lithium-Ion batteries that have been delivered as prototypes and successfully tested in a Th!nk EV (electric vehicle). They’ve already built a manufacturing and testing facility and expect to begin manufacturing by the end of this year. So they might actually be the first to offer a production Litium-Ion battery to the auto industry.
For the long term, Ener1 is developing nano-materials for better battery storage. That’s very intriguing with oil prices high, but not something to hold your breath for.
And, you have to like the fact that they’ve shifted from the OTC market to the AMEX, which makes the company seem that much more credible. (www.ener1.com)
If you’re a fan of Lithium-Ion batteries you could do worse than to look at Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (SQM) the Chilean mining company that produces potassium nitrate, iodine and lithium carbonate other specialty products. They just happen to also be the world’s biggest producer of Lithium, a business that was 15% of their revenues last year but is expanding fast and expected to approach 40% by the end of this year. Clearly, they will be a big benefactor of any significant increase in demand for Lithium from whichever battery maker, or makers, succeed in launching real-world products. (www.sqm.com)
Some other battery technology companies to keep an eye out for include:
Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (MXWL) - supercapacitors (www.maxwell.com)
Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) - nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery technology (www.ovonic.com)
Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc (ABAT) - polymer Lithium-Ion (www.advancedbatterytech.com)
While the Lithium-Ion batteries seem to get most of the star attention, the advantages, mainly smaller size, relative to the cost only pay off for mobile devices right now. So the old-fashioned lead-acid battery is likely to continue to hold on to a big piece of the market for a long time yet. But the lead-carbon hybrid concept offers bankable advantages like faster charge, longer life and higher power. So it may find a significant market once production begins in earnest.

Renewable Energy Stocks Sector Close- Up on Solar Stocks Performance; “Solar Stocks Exploded to the Upside” Reports J. Peter Lynch
Foreign Investment in Thin Film Solar Stock Attributed to Momentum
POINT ROBERTS, WA and DELTA, BC –March 31, 2008, www.RenewableEnergyStocks.com, a leading investor news and research portal for the renewable energy sector within Investorideas.com, presents a sector close- up on solar stocks following last weeks surge.
Commenting on recent solar stock activity, Brian C. Yerger, Research Analyst at Jesup & Lamont Securities attributed some of the momentum to thin film solar company, Ascent Solar Technologies
(News, Market ). Norsk Hydro ASA increased ownership in ASTI by purchasing an additional 2,341,897 shares with gross proceeds to the company of approximately $28.4 million. He reports in an audio commentary, “With a weak dollar, foreign companies may be looking at some of these smaller solar stocks as extremely cheap investments in terms of future performance.”

Other factors in the solar stocks spike include earnings from Solarfun beating estimates and the announcement of the Southern California Edison (News, Market) 250 megawatt installation.
Renewable Energy Stocks solar expert, J Peter Lynch gives a different spin,” In my opinion, one of the primary reasons for this solar rally is really quite simple – NO MORE SELLERS were left to drive solar stock down any further. In his recent column he goes on to say, “Last week, seemingly out of nowhere, solar stocks literally exploded (up over 15% for the week) catching almost everyone by total surprise. The general market has recently been in turmoil over the housing crisis, the credit crunch and the looming fear of an impending recession; not exactly a general market environment conducive for rallies in any sector. But in spite of this bleak backdrop the solar sector roared ahead regardless.”
In terms of future success in the solar sector he reports he looks for companies that are “ vertically integrated in the traditional silicon segment, have cost effective thin film products or are in higher margin areas such as building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). “
Lux Research forecasts a shakeout in the solar industry, “We project that the supply of solar modules will exceed demand in 2009, leading to falling prices and a shake-out among companies that aren’t prepared to thrive in this new environment – particularly crystalline silicon players that haven’t invested in new thin-film technologies.”
Tom Djokovich, CEO of thin film solar company XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX) presented,
“Thin film solar technologies offer opportunities to deliver the lower cost per watt. This is due to lower material costs, and the ability to scale and automate manufacturing processes. I believe that these are among the reasons that analysts anticipate greater compounded growth rates for thin films than other solar technologies.”
XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX) is developing amorphous silicon thin film photovoltaic (TFPV) solar cell manufacturing processes to produce TFPV solar modules. XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX) closed at 0.44 on Friday, up 10.00% on over 460,000 shares.

Tom Djokovich, CEO of XsunX, Inc. (OTCBB: XSNX).
Mr. Djokovich provides valuable solar technology insight with his comparison of their amorphous silicon with conventional silicon wafer technology. He stated, “Amorphous silicon has certain properties that make it a better solar absorber than silicon wafer. The bottom line is that on a watt per watt basis, it outperforms many other technologies, specifically silicon wafer because it starts working earlier in the morning, works later into the evening, is more efficient in cloud cover and at the same time has minimal thermal degradation during the warmest parts of the day.”
Mr. Djokovich goes on to discuss XsunX’s phased roll out of production capacity, growing manufacturing capacities to over 100 megawatts by 2010 and what that means for investor’s patient enough to wait it out. He also provides an update on the current status of the production facility and insight into the company’s target markets and competitive strengths in the solar industry.
