Investorideas.com reports on the recent Global Entrepreneurship Congress held
in Medellin Colombia and an overview of the ‘New Medellin’ the world had the
opportunity to see.
Just over ten years ago, Medellin was one
of the most violent cities in the world. Now, they have hosted the Global
Entrepreneurship Congress and were able to show off how they plan on changing
people’s view of their city.
In Medellin the population is leaning more
towards a world title of “entrepreneur” rather than the well known “drug
trafficker.” So far, they are on their way to succeeding.
This years GEC helped showcase the talent
the government and ProColombia are trying so hard for the world to see. They
pulled out all the stops but they were very careful to not hide the fact they
still had far to go.
David Sierra from Ruta N, established in
Medellin to promote innovative technology-based businesses, said they still
have more to overcome but they have to be proud of what they have achieved.
Many different programs have been set up in order to catapult the rising tech
sector in Medellin. From establishing their own entrepreneurs to helping start
up companies build a following in their city.
Programs like Parque E have been set up to
encourage entrepreneurship. Universities offer programs connected to Parque
which provides the space, the help and the network for individuals to launch
their product. The building is set up as a kind of library for businesses.
Marque provides the space and the connectivity while business owners bring
their own computers and printers etc.
Patricia Fuel, Director of Parque E, says
companies establishing themselves in their building are also able to outsource
different products from other companies also starting out. For example, if a
company in the cubicle next to you does website design and your company needs a
website, voila, connections made and a job completed.
The Landing Program, established by Ruta N
has a little bit of a different feel to it. Same idea but instead of working
with mostly university students or young entrepreneurs, the Landing Program
provides assistance to companies coming from out of country and wanting to
establish a home base their in Medellin. Similar set up as Parque E since the
Landing Program provides an “office” type work space and the connectivity minus
the kind of hand-holding you can find at Parque. Only because most of the
companies using the Landing Program are typically established in some way or
another and just wanting to set up roots in a different area.
Overall, Medellin is well on their way to
building their new reputation. One that doesn't coincide with the one “Narcos”
has shown to over 3.2 million viewers.
